Iran has leveled accusations against Qatar, claiming the nation is hindering efforts to investigate the whereabouts of three Iranian pilots who Tehran asserts disappeared during a recent conflict. In response, Qatar has firmly denied these allegations, rejecting any claims of detaining the pilots. Iranian armed forces official Mohammad Bagherzadeh highlighted that an Iranian Air Force expert team has been awaiting authorization for months to travel to Qatar to probe the situation. He urged the Qatari authorities to permit the visit and called for the International Committee of the Red Cross to monitor the issue.
Previously, Iran disclosed that it had recovered the body of pilot Majid Kazemi, who lost his life in an incident involving the US Al Udeid Air Base located in Qatar. Contradicting Iran’s claims, Qatar’s Foreign Ministry spokesperson, Majed al-Ansari, firmly denied that any Iranian pilots were being held in Qatar. He explained that the pilots had been contacted after allegedly breaching Qatari airspace, and defensive actions were taken when the pilots failed to respond to communication attempts.
Qatar has stated that its search and rescue teams had conducted operations to locate the missing pilots and their remains. Furthermore, Doha mentioned that it coordinated with Iran regarding the transfer of the remains of one pilot that had been recovered. According to the Qatari government, Iranian officials were invited as early as April to dispatch a team to Qatar to gain insights about the search and rescue endeavors, but no response was received from Iran.
This disagreement emerges amid persistent tensions involving Iran, the United States, and other regional countries following the conflict’s outbreak earlier this year. Throughout these developments, Qatar has been instrumental in diplomatic efforts aimed at alleviating tensions and facilitating dialogue among the involved parties.
