US President Donald Trump’s announcement of an energy ceasefire between Russia and Ukraine has sparked controversy, as Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy claims he was not consulted regarding the agreement. Trump declared via social media that both countries had agreed to halt attacks on energy infrastructure, but Zelenskyy stated that Ukraine would participate only if Russia agreed to the same terms.
The announcement comes amid ongoing tensions between Washington and Kyiv over Ukraine’s long-range strikes on Russian oil refineries. Trump urged Ukraine to cease these attacks, while Zelenskyy maintained that Russia must first stop its strikes on Ukrainian energy facilities. Zelenskyy has called for reciprocal commitments and security guarantees to ensure that any agreement is honored by Moscow.
Despite Trump’s announcement, Zelenskyy reported that Russian drones and airstrikes continued unabated, with Ukrainian energy infrastructure, including a thermal power station in Kharkiv, remaining under attack. He also noted persistent strikes on gas and oil facilities across Ukraine.
Complicating matters further, Trump has proposed easing sanctions on Russian diesel exports, arguing that it could help lower fuel prices ahead of the US midterm elections. Zelenskyy criticized this decision, warning that it would bolster Russia’s financial capacity to sustain the war.
The discord has led to tensions between Washington and Kyiv, with Trump criticizing Zelenskyy for his unwillingness to make concessions and suggesting a need for new leadership in Ukraine. Zelenskyy countered that leadership decisions rest with the Ukrainian people and indicated he would consider elections if Russia agreed to a comprehensive 60-day ceasefire.
The proposed ceasefire remains uncertain without clear confirmation of Russian agreement to its terms. The ongoing disagreements emphasize the growing friction between the US and Ukraine over the conditions necessary to end the conflict and the security guarantees required to maintain peace. Zelenskyy continues to engage with European and international leaders to strengthen support for Ukraine, as several European leaders advocate for continued pressure on Russia and an immediate cessation of attacks on Ukrainian energy infrastructure.
