In a significant development, Bulgaria’s Interior Minister Ivan Demerdzhiev has presented a comprehensive report to Parliament, shedding light on ongoing investigations into individuals sanctioned under the US Global Magnitsky Act. Among those under scrutiny is politician Delyan Peevski. The report comes in response to calls from lawmakers eager for insights into the progress of these high-profile probes.
The Interior Ministry has disclosed that the report encompasses flight reservation and travel data from the year 2023 through June 2026 for those currently under investigation. Officials have emphasized that the release of this information pertains to ongoing investigations and does not interfere with future law enforcement activities. The central focus of the investigation is to determine whether sanctioned individuals have employed associates, businesses, or other means to circumvent international sanctions, all while retaining control over their financial and business interests.
Additionally, Bulgarian authorities are working collaboratively with the US Treasury Department to scrutinize potential instances of sanctions evasion. The situation has garnered heightened attention due to allegations surrounding Peevski’s use of private jets and the financing of over 180 private flights. As part of the investigation, authorities are probing potential connections between these flights, related business transactions, and assets linked to the Corpbank case.
Concurrently, Bulgaria’s Prosecutor’s Office has initiated inspections into the alleged improper use of passenger reservation (PNR) data, following several complaints. The outcome of these inspections will determine whether there is sufficient basis to advance to a formal criminal investigation.
