Austria is contemplating participation in Luxembourg’s GovSat 2 satellite communications initiative, as both nations aim to enhance their defense and security collaboration. This development emerged during the Austrian Defence Minister Klaudia Tanner’s visit to Luxembourg, where she engaged in discussions with her counterpart, Luxembourg Defence Minister Yuriko Backes, focusing on expanding cooperation in defense, space, and cybersecurity.
During her visit, Minister Tanner also explored Austria’s potential involvement in the GovSat 2 programme with SES, a prominent satellite operator. She emphasized the growing importance of secure satellite communications amidst increasing geopolitical tensions. Tanner noted that bolstering collaboration could enhance the resilience of governmental communications systems and support Europe’s strategic autonomy.
GovSat 2 is poised to deliver secure communications services to Luxembourg’s defense sector, the European Union, NATO, and allied nations. The satellite is slated for a 2029 launch, aiming to fortify secure communications across these entities. This initiative represents a significant step in strengthening defense capabilities and ensuring robust communication channels during critical times.
In addition to the satellite communications discussions, Austria and Luxembourg have signed a letter of intent to fortify their cooperation in various defense-related areas. These include advancements in cybersecurity, space technology, and military training, indicating a broadening scope of collaboration between the two countries. However, Austria has yet to disclose its potential financial commitment to the GovSat 2 project should it decide to join.
