Mercedes driver Kimi Antonelli has inched closer to making history as the youngest-ever Formula One world champion after claiming victory at the United States Grand Prix in Austin on Sunday. The 20-year-old Italian’s win leaves him just two points away from clinching the coveted title, with the next race scheduled in Mexico.
Antonelli currently leads the drivers’ standings with 365 points, maintaining a commanding lead over his closest competitors. His Mercedes teammate George Russell sits in second place with 242 points, while Ferrari’s seasoned driver and seven-time world champion Lewis Hamilton is third with 241 points. In Austin, Russell finished eighth, and Hamilton crossed the finish line in fourth position.
After the race, Antonelli expressed his hope to maintain this momentum through to the end of the season, planning to carry it forward into 2027. Despite being on the verge of becoming a champion, he emphasized that his approach to each race would remain consistent. “I hope to finish the season on a high,” Antonelli remarked, underlining his determination to stay focused.
If Antonelli secures the championship, it would not only set a new record for the youngest champion in Formula One history but also mark the first time an Italian has claimed the drivers’ title since Alberto Ascari in 1953. With five race weekends remaining, the young driver is well-poised to etch his name in the annals of motorsport history.
