Luxembourg City Plans CCTV Expansion to Enhance Downtown Security

by admin477351

Luxembourg City is seeking to enhance security in its city centre by expanding CCTV surveillance. Mayor Lydie Polfer has formally requested authorization from Home Affairs Minister Léon Gloden to install more cameras in key areas, although the exact number and locations remain undecided.

The decision follows the municipal council’s approval in principle, with police tasked with assessing security needs to identify priority zones for the cameras. Mayor Polfer emphasized that while CCTV cannot prevent all crimes, it is a valuable tool for investigators to identify suspects and reconstruct incidents.

The initiative aims to bolster police resources amid rising security concerns, as highlighted by Deputy Mayor Maurice Bauer. He pointed out that similar surveillance enhancements have already been implemented in the Gare district and Bonnevoie to address increasing offences.

Local business owners and residents have been vocal about the need for stronger security measures to combat issues like pickpocketing. Supporters of the proposal believe that visible CCTV cameras could serve as a deterrent to criminal activities and aid in police investigations.
