Vietnam and Switzerland are poised to enhance their longstanding diplomatic relations by expanding cooperation across multiple sectors, including trade, investment, innovation, science, and technology. This intent was outlined during an event in Bern celebrating Vietnam’s National Day and the 55th anniversary of diplomatic ties between the two nations.

Nguyễn Thị Thanh, the Vietnamese National Assembly Vice President, emphasized Vietnam’s commitment to its relationship with Switzerland, highlighting the historical support Switzerland has provided. Thanh noted the progression of bilateral ties in politics, trade, investment, education, and other fields, and stressed Vietnam’s aim to deepen these connections based on political trust and traditional friendship. She identified opportunities for collaboration in areas where Switzerland’s expertise aligns with Vietnam’s developmental needs.

Economic cooperation is a cornerstone of the Vietnam-Switzerland relationship, with annual trade exceeding $2 billion. Over 100 Swiss companies have invested and expanded their operations in Vietnam, particularly in sectors such as pharmaceuticals, food processing, precision machinery, and watchmaking.

Swiss Senator Mauro Poggia commended the significant expansion of bilateral cooperation since Vietnam embarked on its economic renewal process, acknowledging Switzerland’s support for Vietnam’s economic transformation and sustainable development initiatives.

Vietnamese Ambassador to Switzerland, Châu Mai Anh, highlighted upcoming milestones in the bilateral relations, including the establishment of a Comprehensive Partnership in 2025 and the conclusion of free trade agreement negotiations between Vietnam and the European Free Trade Association.

Both countries see further potential for cooperation in innovation, digital transformation, sustainable development, finance, and human resource development, promising a continued deepening of ties as they build on their established partnership.
