Italy Maintains Diplomatic Ties With Egypt Despite Regeni Case Convictions

by admin477351

Italy will maintain its diplomatic relations with Egypt despite recent calls to sever ties following the conviction of Egyptian security officials in connection with the abduction of Italian researcher Giulio Regeni. Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni emphasized that ongoing diplomatic engagement with Egypt is crucial for continuing the pursuit of justice and truth regarding Regeni’s case.

In a recent ruling, a Rome court sentenced three Egyptian officials to ten years in prison each for their roles in Regeni’s abduction, although a fourth defendant was acquitted. The court did not assign responsibility for Regeni’s torture and murder, and the verdict is still subject to appeal. This decision has prompted criticism from opposition lawmakers who demand more stringent government action and accountability from Egyptian authorities.

Meloni expressed her solidarity with Regeni’s family and reiterated the Italian government’s commitment to uncovering the full truth about the case. She argued that maintaining political and diplomatic channels with Egypt allows Italy to continue pressing for answers and accountability.

Italy’s Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani also defended the government’s stance, indicating that diplomatic efforts with Egypt have persisted. He affirmed that Italy remains focused on identifying those responsible for Regeni’s death, ensuring that the pursuit of justice continues.

Despite the court’s decision and subsequent calls for action, the Italian government appears resolute in its diplomatic approach, believing it to be the most effective way to achieve justice for Giulio Regeni and his family. The situation continues to spark debates within Italy, as officials balance diplomatic relations with pressing for answers and accountability from Egypt.
