While Keshav Maharaj will rightly claim the headlines for his five-wicket haul, it was debutant Prenelan Subrayen who unlocked the door for South Africa’s stunning 98-run victory over Australia. Subrayen’s crucial first breakthrough set the stage for Maharaj to unleash mayhem upon the Australian middle order.
Chasing 297, Australia’s openers had looked untroubled, cruising to 0-60. It was the right-arm off-spinner Subrayen who broke the dangerous partnership, having Travis Head stumped for 27. This single wicket proved to be the crack in the dam, and what followed was a flood of Australian wickets.
With an opening created, the veteran Maharaj took full advantage. He delivered a career-best spell of 5-33, bowling his 10 overs unchanged to dismantle the rest of the lineup. The hosts lost a staggering six wickets for just 29 runs, a collapse from which they never recovered, eventually being bowled out for 198.
Earlier, South Africa’s innings of 8-296 was a model of consistency, built on fine half-centuries from Aiden Markram (82) and Temba Bavuma (65). This solid total, combined with the two-pronged spin attack, proved a winning formula for the Proteas, who now lead the series 1-0.
