The European Union Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) has granted Dutch company PAL-V permission to start manufacturing aviation components for its innovative Liberty flying car. This significant development brings PAL-V one step closer to making the dream of a commercially operational flying car a reality. The company, headquartered in the Netherlands, is now authorized to produce the aviation-related parts necessary for the three-wheeled Liberty vehicle.
For PAL-V, the next critical milestone is obtaining full certification of the Liberty as an aircraft. Achieving this would legally allow it to take flight, a goal the company is aiming to accomplish by 2028. The Liberty is an intriguing hybrid of car and aircraft, featuring a retractable rotor and propeller system. On the road, it functions like a traditional car, but for air travel, its rotor is deployed. Unlike helicopters, however, the Liberty requires a runway to take off and land, as it cannot perform vertical takeoffs.
Prospective pilots and drivers of the Liberty will need to hold both a driving license and a pilot’s license to operate the vehicle. The flying car is capable of reaching a top road speed of approximately 160 km/h, and it boasts an estimated flight range of about 500 km. This dual functionality sets a new benchmark in personal transportation, blending the convenience of road travel with the allure of flight.
The Liberty is priced starting at around €299,000, excluding taxes and additional costs. Despite the high price tag, the market response has been robust, with the initial batch of 250 units already sold. Among the buyers is the Dutch fire brigade, which highlights the vehicle’s potential utility beyond personal use. Should PAL-V successfully achieve the required aviation certification within the anticipated timeline, these flying cars could become a common sight in the skies by 2028.
