Singapore’s Prime Minister, Lawrence Wong, emphasized the shared challenges the two nations face as small states with constrained domestic markets and limited natural resources. By leveraging their openness and international networks, both countries have successfully positioned themselves as significant financial and business centers serving broader regional markets.
Highlighting the strong economic bonds between the two nations, Wong pointed out that Luxembourg is the largest European Union investor in Singapore. Conversely, Singapore ranks as Luxembourg’s second-largest investment destination within the EU. In addition to these economic ties, both countries are committed to fortifying the links between the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) and the European Union. Wong noted their mutual interest in supporting regional integration and maintaining an open, rules-based international order.
During his official visit to Singapore from September 6 to 8, Luxembourg’s Prime Minister Luc Frieden met with President Tharman Shanmugaratnam. Their discussions addressed geopolitical shifts and explored avenues for fostering stability, predictability, and adherence to the rule of law. This visit coincides with the commemoration of 50 years of diplomatic relations between Singapore and Luxembourg, marked by the recent opening of Luxembourg’s first resident embassy in Singapore—a testament to its dedication to enhancing engagement with Singapore and the broader region.
Luxembourg’s commitment to this partnership is further evidenced by Frieden’s scheduled delivery of the 48th Singapore Lecture on September 8. His lecture will focus on the evolving role and autonomy of Europe in a dynamic global landscape. As both nations look to the future, their collaborative efforts in emerging technologies and regional diplomacy underscore the strength and potential of their alliance.
