Us-Canada trade talks have been halted by president Trump, who called an ad from Ontario “fraudulent” and “fake.”
The ad used a 1987 clip of Ronald Reagan warning against tariffs. Trump, on truth social, accused Canada of “egregious behavior” and interference.
The ad was launched by Ontario premier Doug Ford to protest the 35% US tariffs on Canadian goods, which have hit his province’s economy hard.
The ad has also drawn criticism from the Ronald Reagan Presidential Foundation. They stated the “selective audio” was used without permission and “misrepresents” the former president’s full message.
The suspension of talks, confirmed by secretary of state Marco Rubio, jeopardizes a vital trade relationship, as over 75% of Canadian exports go to the us.
