Gambling Charity Leaders Warn: Vulnerable People Could Die Due to Commissioning Delays

by admin477351

Leaders of major gambling charities are issuing a devastating warning: delays in the new NHS commissioning process could directly lead to the deaths of vulnerable service users. The unexpected financial vacuum created by the mandatory levy transition is threatening to shut down treatment centers, severing the lifeline for hundreds battling severe addiction.

Historically, funding for research and treatment came from voluntary sector contributions. This structure was replaced by a compulsory levy to ensure more substantial, reliable funding. However, the complex shift of responsibility, particularly the delay in the NHS establishing and executing new commissioning contracts, has resulted in a severe, sudden lack of operating capital for existing providers.

Organisations like Gordon Moody and GamCare are struggling to navigate the opaque new system, which is characterized by shifting requirements and bureaucratic delays. They emphasize that the government’s lack of preparedness for this commissioning transition has disproportionately affected smaller, specialized providers that are crucial for localized, immediate support.

The anxiety among clients is reaching critical levels. Individuals in the middle of structured therapy programs are now facing the realistic possibility that their support will vanish. Staff report intense fear among clients, and former users are desperate to convey the deadly risk: interrupting addiction treatment is a known precursor to severe relapse and an increase in suicidal behaviour.

The sector’s plea is unified and urgent: temporary government funding must be approved immediately to maintain essential services. They argue that the priority must be the continuity of patient care, not the speed of the administrative changeover. The government is under intense pressure to move beyond mere assurances and provide a tangible commitment to emergency financial support.
