China and Switzerland have successfully completed negotiations to enhance their free trade agreement, signaling a move towards strengthened economic ties between the two nations amid increasing global trade tensions. Announced in Bern, Chinese Commerce Minister Wang Wentao and Swiss President Guy Parmelin revealed the conclusion of these discussions and signed a memorandum of understanding. The negotiation process, which began in September 2024, reached its conclusion after five comprehensive rounds.
The revised trade agreement is poised to facilitate broader access to each country’s markets in several areas, including trade in goods and services, investment, and trade regulations. Both countries anticipate that the upgraded agreement will foster a more stable and predictable environment for businesses, ultimately bolstering long-term economic collaboration.
The original free trade agreement between China and Switzerland was established in 2013 and came into effect a year later in 2014. This recent development marks a significant milestone in their bilateral relations, as both parties now move forward to complete their respective domestic procedures necessary to formally sign and implement the enhanced agreement.
