Italy Weighs Fuel Tax Cuts Linked to Rising Diesel Prices

by admin477351

Italy is exploring the introduction of a mobile fuel tax reduction as rising diesel prices begin to burden consumers and businesses. Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni announced that the government is considering a flexible tax mechanism to alleviate the impact of escalating energy costs. This proposal follows the expiration of a temporary diesel tax cut, which had lowered duties by 6.1 cents per liter until it ended earlier this week.

The conclusion of the tax relief measure led to a noticeable increase in fuel prices. For instance, Eni, a major energy company, raised the maximum diesel price at its petrol stations from €2.19 to €2.25 per liter, while the price cap for unleaded petrol held steady at €1.99 per liter. In response, the government is urging energy firms and fuel retailers to uphold temporary price caps to protect consumers from further increases.

The proposed mobile excise-duty mechanism aims to link fuel tax reductions with the additional VAT revenue generated when fuel prices go up. This would enable the government to utilize some of the extra revenue to counterbalance rising fuel costs. Meloni noted that approximately €170 million has been accumulated since September, which could either be employed immediately or preserved for future measures.

Government officials are currently evaluating the effectiveness of the existing price caps in managing fuel costs before making further decisions. The administration’s efforts will focus on whether the accumulated funds should be deployed now or reserved to address potential future price hikes.
