Eni Caps Fuel Prices in Italy as Sicilian Truckers Announce Strike

Italy’s state-controlled energy company, Eni, has implemented a 30-day cap on fuel prices at its stations, setting a maximum price of €2.19 per litre for diesel and €1.99 for unleaded petrol. This initiative, effective from Monday, aims to alleviate financial pressure on households and businesses amidst persistent high fuel costs linked to tensions from the Iran conflict. The capped prices represent a reduction of approximately 17 cents per litre compared to the average prices at the time of the announcement.

In response to ongoing high fuel costs and perceived government inaction, Sicilian truck drivers have announced a strike from October 16 to 20. The trucking sector is voicing its dissatisfaction, highlighting a critical demand for governmental intervention and dialogue to address their concerns. Taxi drivers have also expressed apprehension over rising fuel prices, warning of potential industrial action if their requests for discussions with the government are not addressed.

Azerbaijan’s SOCAR, another major energy company, plans to introduce similar fuel price caps at its IP petrol stations in Italy, further contributing to efforts aimed at mitigating the financial impact on consumers.

The Italian government has additionally taken steps to reduce diesel duties as part of a broader strategy to control fuel expenses. However, these tax reductions are set to expire in early October, adding urgency to the situation as stakeholders await further governmental measures.
