Luxembourg has secured the fifth spot in Europe for the quality of its bathing water, with an impressive 94.1% of its monitored sites reaching the European Union’s “excellent” standard. This data comes from the most recent annual evaluation by the European Environment Agency and the European Commission. The report highlights that the quality of bathing water across Europe remains commendably high. Out of over 22,200 monitored sites, a significant 85% have achieved the EU’s top quality rating, and 96% have met the minimum required standards. Notably, only 1.5% of the sites were found to have poor water quality.
Austria, Bulgaria, Cyprus, and Greece have emerged as the top performers, with more than 95% of their bathing waters receiving an excellent rating. Luxembourg’s commendable performance places it ahead of Germany, which is in seventh place, while France ranks 21st. Meanwhile, Belgium stands at the 24th position, with 67.9% of its monitored sites achieving the highest classification. The assessment focuses on measuring bacteria levels that can lead to severe health problems. Coastal waters have fared particularly well, with 88% receiving an excellent rating, compared to 78% for inland bathing areas such as rivers and lakes.
European officials attribute these positive outcomes to decades of environmental policies, including the EU’s bathing water regulations. Enhanced wastewater treatment systems, rigorous pollution monitoring, and improved water resource management have also played crucial roles. However, despite these achievements, authorities caution that there are ongoing challenges, especially concerning chemical pollution and the increasing impact of climate change on water ecosystems.
