During a gathering of NATO foreign ministers in Helsingborg, Sweden, Italy’s Deputy Premier and Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani expressed the nation’s ambition to assume a prominent role within both NATO and the European Union. Tajani underscored Italy’s dedication to bolstering its position in Europe’s security landscape, emphasizing the country’s significant contributions of troops and military assistance to the NATO alliance.

Tajani articulated Italy’s aspiration to be part of NATO’s leadership in Europe, highlighting the importance of the country’s involvement in regional defense and strategic partnerships. He affirmed Italy’s commitment to enhancing its influence within these international frameworks.

In a separate statement, Tajani revealed that he has been actively engaging with his counterparts in the European Union regarding Italy’s pursuit of sanctions against Israeli National Security Minister Itamar Ben Gvir. This initiative comes in response to the contentious treatment of Global Sumud Flotilla activists who were detained at the Israeli port of Ashdod.

The incident involving the activists has sparked international scrutiny and criticism, prompting Italy to call for discussions within the EU to address the situation. Tajani’s actions signal Italy’s intent to engage in diplomatic dialogues to resolve the matter.
