The common phrase “Hold on, I’m watching a Reel” may soon become a thing of the past. Instagram is testing a Picture-in-Picture (PiP) feature that will allow users to continue watching videos while replying to messages, making social interactions and content consumption a simultaneous activity.
This new functionality, currently in a limited trial, is a direct answer to the everyday dilemma of choosing between watching a video and responding to a friend. When a user switches apps, the Reel will automatically shrink into a small, floating window. This seamless transition is designed to make the platform feel more integrated with the user’s communication habits.
For creators, this means their content can now coexist with their audience’s social life, rather than competing with it. This could lead to a significant increase in video completion rates, as viewers no longer have to drop out of a Reel to answer a quick text. As with similar features, users will have the option to easily disable it.
This social-centric update is paired with another major platform enhancement: the launch of a native iPad app. The new application provides an optimized experience for tablet users, making it easier to view and engage with content on a larger, more shareable screen.
